Shared note
In 1915 he enlisted and joined the RASC(MT) Royal Army Service Corps (Motor Transport) as a driver. After WWI he became proprietor of the Marshall Avenue Garage, Bridlington. Not annexed to any oil company he sold Shell and National Benzole petrol and Castrol Oils. The Garage had parking space for 40-50 cars and was usually filled with visitors cars during the summer holiday season. Not noted for his patience, he would not hesitate to send customers packing if they offended him. During the Second World War, because of petrol rationing, only two garages in the town were allowed to be open. His was not one of these and so he was employed at the Yorkshire Yacht Building & Engineering Co Ltd in Havelock Street installing and setting to work the engines of RAF Rescue Launches which were being built there. His daughter Violetta was also employed there during this period.
