The Vegetarian Cycling Club still exists and but is now called the Vegetarian Cycling and Athletics Club (VCAC). From their archives Jules was recorded as a junior member in 1909 and 1910 only. The medals are club standard medals and would have been awarded for the best of his performances in said year(s). One had to improve the following year for another medal at the distance. The member cyclists abandoned the scheme in about 1980 due to the lack of pre-season entries. The medals are two silvers and a gold centered silver. The backings are the jeweller's stock items with club badges as appropriate soldered on, the usual practice still today. |
Feat | Manacled Swim In The Thames 1909 (Age 23 years)Note: Jules is directly behind his father, in the boater. This picture was taken near London Bridge which is behind the camera. The warehouse in the background, Pickfords Wharf, near the railway bridge is still there so gives a definitive location for the photo.
