Health and Strength League
1933 (Age 16 years)

Note:
Jimmy was a member of the Health and Strength League. THE HEALTH AND STRENGTH LEAGUE The Health and Strength League was established in 1906 as part of that flurry of concern about the poor state of the nations male bodies. The League had a membership of 13,000 in 1911 and by the First World War, membership had doubled. In 1930: The first Mr & Miss Britain Title was held. This inaugural event caused a great upsurge in membership and 1936 alone 11398 new members enrolled. The organisation became Worldwide and by 1943 the League had a staggering 191,000 members. THE LEAGUES PRINCIPLES The League declared itself to be "catholic Impartial and Independent", open to all who shared their aim: "Health and right living". The principle was the "sacredness of the body". Members of this "robust brotherhood" had to be over the age of 14, and capable of paying an enrolment fee of 1s 6d. Although no further subscription was required, members had to pledge themselves to forward the cause of physical culture, to take "judicious exercise" daily; to encourage fitness in others, to extend the 'right hand of friendship'to other members, to adhere to the principle of temperance and chastity, and to discourage juvenile smoking "and all other evil habits. Although the motto on badges was "Sacred thy Body even as thy Soul", members were reminded of a better motto which might help the "order their lives": that motto was "Brotherhood". For them, the body was to be "built", or "finely-tuned", to adhere to aesthetic as well as labour demands. The key words were maintenance and surveillance.
